Thankfully we have all managed to get some golf played in April, and we have only had one competition cancelled.

We had a very enjoyable Texas Scramble with the Squirrels at the beginning of April, which was followed by a 2 course meal in the John More Suite. In teams of 4 – the teams consisted of 2 Ladies and 2 Squirrels. The winning team was Tom Doig, Roger Tringham, Anne Fearn and Janette Smith.

Unfortunately, our Team in the Mail on Sunday Classic lost at Penrith 2/3, however Jacqui Raw & Barbara Mitchinson won their Daily Mail Foursomes match against Brampton and play Penrith in the next round.

Jenny Bland & Nicola Tebbutt presented our Team Squads with a very thought provoking evening looking at rules, golf etiquette and match play advice. The scenarios and situations they had photographed for their presentation instigated a number of discussions about the rules of golf. I am indebted to them both for all their hard work and preparation. We are hoping to repeat the presentation for all Lady Members in the near future.

The Captains’ Welcome Dinner on Saturday, 23rd April was well attended and I thank everyone who came for their support. We all enjoyed another of Gary’s delicious dinners in the company of friends.

Finally, we hosted the County Ladies Vets Championships from Monday, 25th April to Wednesday, 27th April. The entry was larger than normal, 61 Silver and 92 Bronze Competitors. A lot of hard work went into organising this event, and I have to thank Margaret for all her help in advance of the Championships, all the Ladies Committee for their help in running the Raffle and Lucky Squares, and to Margaret and Lisa for helping me enter all the scores when the computer in the main lounge failed!

We had a very successful three days. On Monday, Kath Joynt, won the ‘Best Net’ prize in the Silver Division and Anne Thompson finished 3rd in the Bronze Division.
Kath Joynt, Jenny Bland, Mandy McGrath, Lesley Aitken, Sue Cotter and Nicola Tebbutt all qualified for the last 16 Silver Knock-Out on Tuesday & Wednesday – unfortunately Kath & Jenny were unable to play due to other commitments. The final was an all Carlisle affair, Nicola Tebbutt v Sue Cotter. Nicola won 4&2 to become the
Cumbria Vets Champion 2016 – Congratulations Nicola!

On Monday, when the Bronze Vets County Squad was announced, Anne Thompson, Rital Walton and Noeleen Ball were named in the Team and Jen Herring and Caroline Ritchie were included as reserves for the Squad.

I was extremely proud that Carlisle were so well represented in the Championships and delighted that we had so many successful players.

It was a tremendous week for the Club and the positive comments and praise received from the County Vets Officials and other competitors about our wonderful course, catering, hospitality and friendliness made all our hard work worthwhile. Thanks also go to Anthony and his Greens Staff, Garry and the Catering Staff, Jo, Steph and the Bar Staff – everyone pulled together to make it a memorable Championships.

More next month.
