I am going to start this newsletter with something I still can’t believe has happened. We held our Ladies Recruitment Drive Taster Session on Wednesday, 20th July and boy did it go well!

We were overwhelmed on the night when 23 ladies turned up (only 9 had pre-registered). Graeme’s face was a picture as we escorted the ladies to the practice ground for their Intro to Golf. After an hour on the practice ground we all had wine and cupcakes in the John Moore Suite. We (or Graeme) must have wowed them, because 21 signed up and paid on the night for 4 Lessons for £20 and more have joined since.

We have split the ladies into smaller groups and their lessons have already started on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Your Ladies Committee and Graeme have worked extremely hard in getting this up and running and will be present to support them during their lessons. I know I can rely on you all to make these ladies feel welcome if any of you are around when the lessons are taking place or you see them in the Clubhouse.

One of the bonuses of being Lady Captain is that you get invited to Corporate Days that you would not necessarily play in normally. This month I have played in the Mark Nield Wealth Management Golf Day and the Lloyd BMW Golf Day, both at Carlisle. Both days were extremely enjoyable and well organised and my golf was not too bad either, finishing just outside of the prizes.

During ‘Open Week’ it is interesting the characters you meet when you act as a starter on the 1st Tee, especially on the Friday morning when some men turn up the worse for wear after a night out on the town in Carlisle! Many players from other Clubs come year after year and were extremely complimentary about our course, the pro shop, clubhouse and catering.

The winners of our Ladies Open Team Event from Dumfries had never played at Carlisle before. They loved the course and will be back again next year. Unusually for most Golf Clubs, all but one of the prize winners stayed back for the Presentation which really does create a great atmosphere.

Our teams have now played most of their matches, with mixed results. Clubs still have a couple of matches to play before the final League positions are known. Our match results are at the end of this email.

In August we will be looking forward to our Open 4BBB and Away Day at Stocksfield Golf Club. We have our Ladies Gemini on Monday, 5th September – this is your opportunity to invite a lady from another Club to play with you at Carlisle as your guest. I have almost finalised the details and theme of my Lady Captain’s Charity Day and the posters will be going up shortly.

Thank you all for your continued support during my year as Lady Captain.

That’s all for now, more next month.

Lesley Wilkinson
